This week at Star Garage Mansfield, we had a 2019 Vauxhall Combo booked in for some urgent attention. The customer had noticed a warning light on the dashboard, and a message relating to the AdBlue system. Combined with the van’s age and mileage, it quickly became clear this was more than just a sensor glitch.
After an initial inspection, our mechanics identified two issues: the timing belt was overdue for replacement, and the AdBlue system was partially blocked and not injecting correctly. These are both critical systems that need timely intervention to avoid expensive repairs down the line.
Timing belts are one of those components that are easy to overlook — until it’s too late. If it snaps, it can cause catastrophic engine damage. For this Combo, the recommended interval had already passed by over 10,000 miles, so the customer made the right call getting it checked when the warning lights appeared.
We replaced the timing belt and water pump as a set, using OEM-spec components. While the job involves stripping down the engine to access the belt, our team is experienced with these setups and had the new parts installed and tensioned to spec in good time. Replacing the belt and water pump together ensures both systems are refreshed — saving the customer the cost of labour if the water pump were to fail later.
Next, we tackled the AdBlue fault. The AdBlue injector nozzle was heavily crystallised — a common issue when the fluid degrades or the vehicle isn’t completing regular longer journeys. We removed and cleaned the injector and flushed the system using an industrial cleaning solution, before resetting the AdBlue dosing system via diagnostic tools.
After clearing the fault codes and running a regeneration cycle, the van was taken on a test drive to ensure all systems were operating correctly. We monitored live data from the AdBlue system and confirmed that injection rates were back to normal. The warning lights were gone, emissions performance had returned to expected values, and the engine was running smoothly.
This kind of job highlights the importance of preventative maintenance. If this customer had waited, the timing belt could have failed, potentially destroying the engine. Similarly, AdBlue system issues can put the vehicle into limp mode or cause MOT failures due to emissions.
For tradespeople or fleet users who depend on their vehicles, unplanned downtime can be a major issue. At Star Garage Mansfield, we understand that keeping vans on the road is vital — that’s why we give clear, written quotes before any work. We aim to make sure customers know exactly what needs doing and why, with no pressure.
We’ve worked on many Vauxhall vans over the years, and the 1.6 and 1.5 diesel engines in models like the Combo, Vivaro, and Movano often suffer similar issues — especially as they reach 60k–100k miles. If your van is in that range and hasn’t had a belt done, now is the time to get it checked.
We also recommend keeping AdBlue topped up with high-quality fluid and ensuring regular longer journeys to avoid build-up and injector problems. If you’re getting AdBlue-related messages or a “no start countdown,” don’t wait. It’s cheaper to clean and recalibrate the system early than to replace components later on.
If your vehicle is due a timing belt, struggling with AdBlue faults, or just hasn’t had a proper check in a while — give us a ring. We’ll get you in, give it a full look over, and let you know what’s needed. No pressure, no jargon — just honest advice from experienced mechanics in Mansfield.
