Engine Swaps & Engine Replacement in Mansfield
When the engine has to come out — or come out and not go back in — this is the work we do most.
Full engine replacement, engine-out rebuilds, and the honest conversation about which one your car actually needs. We do this in-house on our own ramps and crane, on everything from a BMW N47 to a Jaguar Land Rover Ingenium 2.0.
Engine replacement Mansfield
Most engine jobs come down to three options
By the time an engine problem gets to us it’s usually already been looked at once. The question is rarely “can it be fixed” — it’s which of three routes makes sense for that specific car.
Repair it where it sits. Take the engine out, strip it and rebuild what’s failed. Or take it out and put a different engine in. Those are very different jobs with very different outcomes, and the right answer depends on what’s actually damaged.
We work that out before anything comes apart, not halfway through. That means proper diagnosis first — compression and leak-down where relevant, oil analysis, and a look at what caused the failure rather than just what failed.
The cause matters more than the part. An engine that failed because of a timing chain, an oil pump or a blocked DPF will fail again if you fit a replacement and leave the cause in place.
The decision
Rebuild it, replace it, or stop spending on it
This is the conversation people come here for. There is no universal right answer, but there are four things that decide it — and you can usually tell which way it’s going before the engine comes out.
What actually failed
A dropped valve, a spun bearing and a stretched chain are three different levels of damage. Some are a contained repair; some mean the block is scrap.
Secondary damage
Whether debris has travelled. Chain or oil-pump failures often take the turbo and the bearings with them, and that’s what turns a rebuild into a replacement.
What’s available
On some engines a good used or reconditioned unit is straightforward to source. On others it isn’t, and a rebuild is the realistic route whatever the paperwork says.
What the car is worth to you
Sometimes the honest answer is that the repair costs more than the car is worth. We’d rather tell you that at the diagnosis stage than after the engine is on the floor.
We quote before we commit you to anything. You get the diagnosis, the options and an itemised quote for each route, in writing, before the spanners come out. If one of those routes is “don’t do it”, that’s in there too.
If you want the longer version of this decision, engine replacement vs engine repair walks through it, and engine-out jobs explained covers what’s involved once the decision is made.
Engine work
What we do once the engine has to come out
All of it in-house, on our own equipment, by the same technicians who diagnosed it.
Full engine replacement
Removal, sourcing, fitting and commissioning. Ancillaries transferred and checked rather than swapped over blind.
Engine-out rebuilds
Strip, measure, machine where needed and rebuild. The failure gets traced to a cause before anything goes back together.
Timing chain & belt failures
The most common reason an engine ends up out. Sometimes containable, sometimes not — it depends how far it went.
Timing belts & chainsDiagnosis before commitment
Compression and leak-down testing, oil inspection and live data, so the decision is based on evidence rather than a guess.
Car diagnosticsTurbo & DPF damage
Often the collateral rather than the cause. Fitting an engine without sorting a blocked filter or an oil-starved turbo just resets the clock.
DPF cleaningOil starvation & pump failures
Low oil pressure, a failed pump drive or a blocked strainer. Usually survivable if it’s caught early, terminal if it isn’t.
General repairs
Before you commit
A replacement engine doesn’t fix the reason the last one died
This is the single most expensive mistake we see. A unit gets fitted, the car runs, and eight months later it’s back with the same failure — because the oil-pump drive, the blocked filter or the injector that caused it was never addressed.
Before we fit anything we establish what killed the original. If that means the job gets bigger, you hear it before you agree to it, not after.
Engines we see most
The engines that end up on our crane
We work on all makes, but a few engines account for a disproportionate share of the engine-out work. We’ve written up what goes wrong on each.
Jaguar Land Rover Ingenium 2.0
Timing chain and tensioner wear, oil dilution from failed DPF regeneration, piston cooling solenoid faults and turbo failure. Our main specialism, across XE, XF, F-PACE, E-PACE, Discovery Sport, Evoque, Velar and Defender.
Ingenium engine rebuild Ingenium timing chain problemsBMW N47
The rear-mounted timing chain that fails without much warning. Engine-out every time, and by the time it’s audible the damage is often already done.
N47 timing chain rattle N47 engine rebuildVauxhall, Opel & Chevrolet 1.6 CDTi
A chain that stretches early and takes the guides with it. Common enough that we see them from well outside Nottinghamshire.

Drivers who needed an engine sorting
Ford Kuga · engine replacement
Kuga engine replacement. The guys at Star were amazing. They were quick at responding and kept me informed all the way through the work carried out. They replaced the engine quickly and gave me some good advice.

Mercedes · oil leaks & timing chain
The job was a mammoth task which they carried out with eagerness and successfully completed to a very high standard. They kept me informed of the progress every step of the way — nothing was too much trouble.
Ashley Pearson · Google review
Peugeot 3008 · flywheel & turbo
They did not immediately try to sell me an expensive turbo replacement. Instead, they investigated the cause properly, discussed it with me, and later resolved it with an inexpensive replacement pipe — which turned out to be all that was needed.

Questions
Engine replacement questions we get asked
Is it worth replacing an engine or should I scrap the car?
It depends on what failed, whether debris travelled, what a replacement unit is realistically available for, and what the car is worth to you. We’ll give you an honest view at the diagnosis stage — including when the answer is that it isn’t worth it.
How long does an engine replacement take?
It varies enormously by vehicle and by how quickly a suitable unit can be sourced. We’ll give you a realistic timeframe with the quote rather than an optimistic one.
Do you fit used, reconditioned or new engines?
All three, depending on what’s sensible for that engine. On some there’s a healthy supply of good used units; on others a rebuild of your own engine is the better route.
Can you find out why the engine failed?
Usually, yes, and we think it matters. If the cause isn’t addressed, a replacement engine tends to fail the same way.
My car isn’t drivable — can you still look at it?
Yes. Call and describe what happened. If it needs recovering rather than driving we’ll tell you that rather than have you risk further damage.
Do you work on Jaguar and Land Rover engines?
They’re our specialism. The Ingenium 2.0 diesel in particular — timing chains, oil dilution, piston cooling solenoids, turbos and full rebuilds.
