What oil dilution actually is
Engine oil has one job that matters above everything else: to provide a protective film between moving metal surfaces so they do not wear against each other. Its ability to do that depends on its viscosity — its thickness and resistance to flow. Too thin and the film breaks down under pressure. Too contaminated and it loses its protective properties entirely.
Oil dilution is exactly what it sounds like. Diesel fuel enters the engine oil and mixes with it, progressively thinning it and degrading its lubricating properties. The oil still looks like oil. The engine does not immediately alarm. But from that point on, every component that depends on that oil is receiving less protection than it needs.
