Porsche Cayenne Engine Knock and Misfire: Engine Out, Head Off and What We Found

Workshop Case Study — Porsche Cayenne

A Porsche Cayenne came to us with a knocking sound and a misfire. The timing chain looked fine, so the engine had to come out and the cylinder head had to come off. Here is the diagnosis in order, what we found on the cylinder wall, and why we take the engine out to be sure.

Quick Answer

This Porsche Cayenne came in with a knock and a misfire. We took the engine and gearbox out, found the timing chain looked fine, then removed the cylinder head and found scoring on a cylinder wall. After we spoke to the customer, they chose a replacement engine with a warranty. A knock is a symptom, not a diagnosis, and this job is a good example of why.

The Complaint: A Knock and a Misfire

The Cayenne arrived with two problems at once: a knocking sound and a misfire. We have not named the engine, the year or the mileage, because the video does not say and we will not guess. Everything below is what the footage clearly shows.

After the first look, our technician Marcin had two suspects. One was timing chain stretch. The other was piston slap. They sound similar to the untrained ear, but they point to very different repairs, and a wrong guess could mean a lot of money spent on the wrong thing.

Working Through It: What We Ruled Out and What We Found

The diagnosis went in a deliberate order, and each step removed a suspect:

  1. The engine was removed, with the gearbox separated first.
  2. The timing chain was checked. It looked fine, so that suspect was out.
  3. The crankshaft was checked.
  4. The cylinder head was removed.
  5. On screen, with the head off, the caption reads “the score there”, pointing at scoring on a cylinder wall.
  6. After speaking to the customer, they chose a replacement engine with a warranty.
Suspect What we did Result
Timing chain stretch Checked the chain with the engine out Looked fine
Crankshaft Checked it Nothing reported in the video

What Is Cylinder Bore Scoring?

This is general background, not a statement about this car’s engine. Some engines run directly in a hard aluminium-silicon block with no separate liners. A reference on Alusil explains that scoring happens when the exposed silicon particles in the bore break down, and that the symptoms are higher oil consumption and louder piston noise.

The Porsche Cayenne has been sold with a range of engines. One general reference on the Porsche Cayenne says that engines using Lokasil-coated blocks, the 4.5 litre V8s, can suffer from cylinder bore scoring. We cannot tell you which engine the car in our video had, so please do not read any of that as a verdict on yours.

What it does tell you is that a knock on a car like this is worth taking seriously. A noise from the bottom of the engine rarely gets better by itself, and scoring is not something you can see from the outside.

Why We Take the Engine Out to Be Sure

Looking at bores properly means getting the head off, and on this kind of engine that often means getting the engine out first. It is more work than guessing, and it is the only way to separate a stretched chain from damage inside the cylinders.

The alternative is to replace the part you suspect and hope. If we had assumed a stretched chain and fitted a new one, the knock would have stayed, the customer would have paid twice, and the real fault would have had longer to do damage. With the engine already out, checking the chain was part of the same job, and it answered the question properly.

We cover the reasoning in our guide to engine-out jobs explained. Our Range Rover Evoque replacement engine job shows what the next stage looks like once a customer decides to go that way.

The Customer’s Decision

Finding scoring does not settle what happens next. It gives the owner a decision to make with facts in front of them. In this case, after talking it through with us, the customer chose a replacement engine with a warranty.

That is a legitimate choice, and sometimes the right one. Repair, rebuild and replacement all have a place, and which suits you depends on the car, the extent of the damage and what you want from it afterwards. Our job is to show you what we found and explain the options plainly, not to push one.

If Your Car Has a Knock or a Misfire

  • Do not keep driving it hard. A knock that gets worse under load is telling you something. Stop and get it looked at.
  • Do not assume the cheapest explanation. A timing chain is a common guess, and it was the wrong one here.
  • Ask for the diagnosis in writing. You should be able to see what was checked and what was found.

Start with our car diagnostics. If the answer is inside the engine, our engine replacement and swap service covers the next step. Proper diagnostics is a paid service with us, because it means someone investigating your engine rather than glancing at it.

We do not quote prices in blog posts, because they depend on the car and the damage. Message us your registration and we will tell you what your engine needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What causes an engine knock on a Porsche Cayenne?

There is no single cause. On this car the two suspects were timing chain stretch and piston slap, and the chain turned out to be fine. A knock can also come from bottom-end wear, so the noise alone never settles it. That is why we investigate rather than guess.

What is cylinder bore scoring?

It is damage to the cylinder wall. A general reference on the Alusil aluminium-silicon alloy used in some engine blocks says scoring happens when the exposed silicon particles in the bore break down, and that it shows up as higher oil consumption and louder piston noise.

Can a Porsche Cayenne engine with bore scoring be repaired?

It depends on how far the damage goes, and we would not promise either way without seeing the bores. On this car, after we spoke to the customer, the choice was a replacement engine with a warranty. Our guide to engine replacement vs engine repair explains how that decision is made.

How do you tell piston slap from a timing chain problem?

You cannot be certain from the noise alone, because both can sound like a knock or rattle. On this Cayenne they were the two suspects, and it took the engine out, the chain checked and the cylinder head off to settle it. Our guide to engine-out jobs explained covers why access sometimes decides the method.
