DPF Cleaning in Mansfield
Off-vehicle diesel particulate filter cleaning — the filter comes off the car and gets cleaned properly, not flushed through with an additive and hoped for.
We diagnose why it blocked before we clean it, because a DPF that filled up once will fill up again if the cause is still there. Cars, vans and light commercials.
Your options
There are three ways out of a blocked DPF
Which one you need depends on how blocked it is and what caused it. We establish both before recommending anything.
Forced regeneration
The car is put through a controlled regeneration on the diagnostic equipment. Works when the filter is loaded but not yet saturated, and when the underlying fault has been sorted first.
Off-vehicle cleaning
The filter is removed and cleaned off the car, so the ash and soot actually leave the unit rather than being burnt and redeposited. This is what most blocked filters genuinely need.
Replacement
Sometimes the substrate is cracked, melted or so ash-loaded that cleaning won’t restore it. We’ll tell you when that’s the case rather than take the money for a clean that won’t hold.
Removal
We don’t remove DPFs from road vehicles. If a car was built with one and it isn’t there, it’s an automatic MOT failure and an offence to use on the road.
Why we diagnose first
A blocked DPF is a symptom, not the fault
Filters don’t block for no reason. Something upstream is producing more soot than the system can burn off, or the car isn’t completing its regenerations. Clean the filter without finding that, and you’ll be back within months.
The causes we find most often are a leaking boost pipe, a failing EGR valve, worn or leaking injectors, a faulty pressure or temperature sensor, and journeys that are simply too short for the car to ever complete a regeneration.
So the assessment comes first: live data, pressure differential across the filter, soot and ash loading figures from the ECU, and a look at the fault history rather than just the current codes.
On a Jaguar Land Rover Ingenium, there’s an extra one to rule out. Failed regenerations dilute the engine oil with diesel, which then accelerates timing chain and turbo wear — see Ingenium oil dilution and DPF problems.
We’ve written this up in more detail in DPF cleaning Mansfield: diagnose first, clean right, and there’s a worked example in DPF problems caused by boost leaks.
Symptoms
What a blocking filter looks like from the driver’s seat
A DPF light that comes on and goes off again after a long run is the system working. A light that stays on, or comes back within days, is the system telling you it can’t cope any more.
Watch for reduced power or limp mode, a smell of hot exhaust after short journeys, the cooling fan running hard after you park, rising oil level on the dipstick, and repeated failed regenerations. Any of those and it’s worth checking before the filter saturates completely.

DPF work, in their words
DPF, then a turbo fault
I initially took my car in with DPF issues, and Blaise personally called me to explain the situation in detail, talking me through every available option… he even sent photos of the diagnostics and faults that had been identified. That level of transparency and honesty was incredibly reassuring.

Focus ST3 · after the main dealer
Taken my Focus ST3 to Ford main dealer, they were useless, couldn’t sort my problem out with the engine management light on the dashboard which was a DPF issue. These guys sorted the problem out same day and it’s running great.

Audi A3 · blocked DPF, limp mode
Having driven my Audi A3 home in limp mode from Lincolnshire with a blocked DPF and various lights illuminating my dashboard, I had the massive task of trying to find a garage. This garage is absolutely amazing and I cannot recommend them enough.

Questions
DPF questions we get asked
What is off-vehicle DPF cleaning?
The filter is removed from the car and cleaned as a unit, so soot and accumulated ash physically leave it. On-car methods burn soot off but can’t remove ash, which is what eventually fills a filter permanently.
Will a bottle of additive fix it?
Occasionally, on a lightly loaded filter with no underlying fault. On a properly blocked one it won’t, and it can make an expensive situation worse by masking the cause.
Can you just remove the DPF?
Not on a road vehicle. If a car left the factory with a DPF and doesn’t have one, it’s an automatic MOT failure and an offence to use on the road.
How do I know if it’s blocked or just regenerating?
A light that clears after a longer run is normal. One that stays on, returns quickly, or arrives with reduced power needs checking.
Do you clean van and light commercial filters?
Yes. A good share of the DPF work here is vans doing short local runs, which is the usage pattern that blocks filters fastest.
Will it block again?
Not if the cause has been dealt with. That’s the reason we diagnose before cleaning rather than after.
