Severe Timing Chain Stretch and Urgent Intervention

This 2015 BMW 120D came to us making a serious rattle. Within seconds of hearing the engine, our lead technician – known as “The Doctor” – advised the customer to switch it off immediately. He said it was one of the worst cases of chain rattle he’d ever heard. The chain was most likely hanging on by a thread, and immediate action was needed to avoid catastrophic failure.

Inspecting the Chain and Diagnosing the Damage

After stripping the engine down, we placed the old timing chain next to a brand-new one. The difference was shocking – a full link longer due to stretch. The cause? A failed chain guide and a tensioner that had been working beyond its design limits, desperately trying to maintain tension. This allowed too much slack, and the result was a chain on the edge of skipping or snapping completely.

Timing Chain Rebuild and Proactive Clutch Replacement

With the damage diagnosed, we fitted a full new timing chain kit including upgraded guides, tensioner, sprockets and seals. During the job, we noted that the customer’s clutch had about 30% life left. Rather than wait and pay again later, they chose to have it replaced now – saving on future labour costs while the gearbox was already out.
