How We Replaced the Cambelt and Water Pump on a Dacia Sandero

This Dacia Sandero came into Star Garage Mansfield right on time for a critical bit of maintenance — its cambelt and water pump replacement.

Like many modern cars, the Dacia Sandero uses a timing belt that controls engine timing. If this belt fails, it can cause serious damage to the engine. That’s why replacement is recommended every few years or after a set mileage — whichever comes first.

Here’s how we carried out the job and why keeping on top of cambelt servicing is essential for engine health.

Meet the Car: Dacia Sandero 1.0 Petrol

The owner brought the vehicle in with around 65,000 miles on the clock. It was still running well — no noises or warning lights — but was due its timing belt change based on mileage and age. The customer wisely chose to do it preventatively.

We also advised replacing the water pump at the same time, since both components live in the same area of the engine and are subject to similar wear. This saves on labour costs and avoids future failure risk.

What We Did

1. Stripped the timing side of the engine
We removed the covers and ancillaries to access the timing belt, crank pulley, tensioners, and water pump.

2. Fitted new cambelt kit and water pump
We installed a full OEM-spec timing belt kit including new tensioners and idlers, plus a brand new water pump with fresh coolant.

3. Rechecked engine timing and tension
We rotated the engine by hand and checked timing alignment using the correct locking tools. Once perfect, we torqued everything to spec.

4. Reassembled and tested
We rebuilt the engine side, topped up coolant, ran the engine to temperature, and checked for leaks and noises.

Why It Matters

Timing belts are one of the most important service items on your car. If they snap, they can bend valves, damage pistons, and destroy the engine — often costing more to fix than the value of the car.

Replacing the cambelt and water pump on time is a smart, cost-effective move. It keeps your car reliable and avoids surprise breakdowns. In this case, the Dacia Sandero left our workshop running perfectly with years of worry-free driving ahead.

One of the most satisfying moments?

Knowing this customer will avoid a major engine failure by doing the job before the damage happens.
