Chain Guide Snapped Clean in Half
This week we had a Vauxhall Mokka in the workshop with one of the most common timing chain issues we’re seeing lately. The customer reported loud rattling on startup and occasional hesitation under load. Sure enough, once we got into the job, we found the chain guide had snapped completely in half.
When this happens, the timing chain is no longer supported correctly and starts to flap or “slap” against other components inside the timing case. In this Mokka’s case, the chain had also chewed up the broken plastic guide, leaving shards and debris that ended up settling in the bottom of the oil sump.
Sump Contamination and Chain Rattle
This is a textbook example of how a worn timing chain system can quickly become a much bigger problem. Not only does it affect timing accuracy and engine noise — but those loose bits of plastic in the sump can also damage oil pumps or restrict pickup flow, leading to low oil pressure and potential engine failure.
We dropped the sump, cleaned it out thoroughly, and inspected the oil pump for signs of blockage or damage. Luckily, no harm was done beyond the noise and timing drift.
Full Timing Chain Replacement
The timing chain kit we fitted included a new chain, guides, tensioners, and crank gear — all fitted to spec with timing marks aligned precisely. With everything cleaned and rebuilt properly, the engine now starts silently and runs smoothly without any rattle or hesitation.
This isn’t the first Mokka we’ve seen with this issue. The OE plastic guides in these engines tend to fatigue and crack, especially after 70–90k miles. If you’re hearing odd noises at startup, it’s worth getting it checked out before more serious damage occurs.
Injector Seal Leaks Also Found
While doing the timing chain, we also found two leaking injector seals. These are common on Mokka diesels and often go unnoticed until carbon build-up gets out of hand or the smell of fumes enters the cabin.
We removed the injectors, cleaned the bores, and fitted new copper seals. Once reassembled and torqued correctly, the injectors were leak-free and seated properly — a must for engine efficiency and smooth idle.
Quick Thanks to a Fellow Garage Legend
We also want to shout out our good friend who let us borrow his ramp to get this job done — both of our own ramps were tied up with cars waiting for delayed parts. That kind of support means a lot when you’re running a busy independent garage. Cheers, mate!
